To celebrate the start of Miami Art Week – the early December week during which Miami hosts the contemporary art fairs Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Miami, and around twenty additional international art events – on Monday, December 1st, the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of Miami inaugurated the exhibition MACRO by Fabio Viale at the Institute’s headquarters. Maestro Viale, who attended the opening, is one of the most original and internationally renowned Italian sculptors.

The opening event began with a video message from Hon. Federico Mollicone, Chair of the Culture, Science, and Education Committee of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, addressed to a large audience of gallerists, collectors, and art enthusiasts. He highlighted a recent legislative measure in Italy that reduces VAT on artwork sales to 5%. This long-awaited change for industry professionals, together with the reform known as Italia in Scena – approved in its first reading – aims to strengthen Italy’s role in the international art market, making it one of the most competitive, agile, and reliable partners.

The Consul General of Italy, Michele Mistò, and the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Miami, Stefano Cerrato, introduced the exhibition, a project that offers the public an immersion into the creative world of Fabio Viale, renowned for his innovative use of marble and his ability to intertwine classical references with contemporary languages.

The exhibition brings into dialogue two large three-dimensional marble works created in 2023 and new pieces that – for the very first time in the artist’s production – introduce a technique consisting of photographs of sculptural works reproduced on marble rather than on paper. This approach allows viewers to explore the details of the sculptures and not merely their overall form.

The photographic images, enriched with gold and silver inlays, give the artist’s latest creations a hybrid and surprising dimension in which photography, painting, and sculpture become part of a single visual experience, inviting viewers to closely examine details, surfaces, and symbols. The project thus outlines a continuous conversation between tradition, technique, and innovation. Moreover, just a few steps from the Cultural Institute, in the City of Coral Gables, a monumental public sculpture, Rotas, was installed in 2023 and is one of the largest ever carved from a single block of marble.

Internationally acclaimed, Fabio Viale (Cuneo, 1975) has developed over the years a poetics that brings together classical motifs with symbols of contemporary culture, such as tattoos, producing works of strong visual impact and remarkable technical complexity. MACRO will remain open to visitors through the end of January 2026 at the Italian Cultural Institute, 209 Altara Avenue, Coral Gables.
