“MACRO”. An exhibition by Fabio Viale

On the occasion of Miami Art Week, the Italian Cultural Institute of Miami has the privilege of hosting MACRO, an exhibition by master sculptor Fabio Viale.
The exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to experience sculpture in an unconventional way, stimulating both reflection and curiosity. This aim is achieved not only through three-dimensional works, but also through photographs of the sculptures reproduced on marble rather than on paper, allowing viewers to explore the details of the pieces and not merely their entirety. The photographic images, enriched with gold and silver inlays, give the artist’s most recent artworks a new dimension, blurring the boundaries between photography, sculpture, painting, and inlay.

In collaboration with the Frascione Art Gallery, the exhibition also features two large marbles created in 2023, which are particularly representative of the artist’s earlier production.

Fabio Viale (Cuneo, 1975) is an internationally renowned Italian sculptor known for his marble works, through which he envisions surprising interpretations of everyday objects. His production often revisits classical art and combines it with contemporary expressive forms, such as tattoo motifs. In 2012, the Museo del Novecento in Milan hosted a selection of his creations and acquired one sculpture for its permanent collection. Along with Italy, prestigious solo exhibitions by Viale have been held in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Russia.

The artist’s performances have also had a strong impact. One of the most astonishing was Aghalla (2002), a 600-kg boat carved entirely from marble— a material not particularly known for its buoyancy—which sailed along the Tiber River in Rome and on the lake in Moscow’s Gorky Park.

One of his major public installations, Rotas, a monumental wheel inspired by the coat of arms of Carrara and by the rose window of the city’s cathedral, has been permanently placed in the City of Coral Gables, very close to the headquarters of the Italian Cultural Institute. It is one of the most massive sculptures ever created from a single block of marble.

The artist will be present at the opening on December 1, 2025 (6:30 PM) at the Italian Cultural Institute, 209 Altara Avenue, Coral Gables.
