The Italian Cultural Institute of Miami supports the “Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival” in Charleston, South Carolina — one of the longest-running and most established festivals in the United States entirely dedicated to contemporary Italian cinema.
Now in its nineteenth edition, the festival takes place from November 6 to 9 at the charming Queen Street Playhouse and features thirteen recently released feature films and documentaries, celebrating the vitality and diversity of today’s Italian cinema.
Program highlights include:
• “Liliana” by Ruggero Gabbai (2024) – the true story of Holocaust survivor Liliana Segre, appointed senator for life in 2018.
• “La bicicletta di Bartali” by Enrico Paolantonio (2024) – an animated film honoring cycling champion Gino Bartali, who secretly worked with the Resistance during World War II, saving 800 Jews from deportation.
• “Follemente” by Paolo Genovese (2025) – a romantic comedy that reveals the most intimate thoughts of its two protagonists.
• “Il tempo che ci vuole” by Francesca Comencini (2024) – an intense drama exploring the relationship between a father and daughter.
• “Diciannove” by Giovanni Tortorici (2024) – a delicate and authentic coming-of-age story.
• “Hey Joe” by Claudio Giovannesi (2024) – a drama starring James Franco as an American man searching for his son in Naples.
