The Italian Cultural Institute (IIC) in Miami and Fondazione di Sardegna present the exhibition Journey in Sardinia. The Photo Solstice 2018-2025, a contemporary photographic interpretation of the Italian island of Sardinia, curated by Marco Delogu.
This exhibition revisits the past eight years of two major artistic initiatives – the Sardinia Commission and The Photo Solstice – both developed under the wider project AR/S – Arte condivisa in Sardegna and led by Franco Carta. Throughout the years of fruitful work on – and off – the island, various exhibitions have been held both locally and internationally, as well as seven years of the “Photo Solstice” workshops; held initially on the island of Asinara, subsequently Gavoi, Cagliari, and most recently the island of Culuccia, offering a unique educational experience free of charge.
On view at the IIC Miami are works by internationally renowned photographers Olivo Barbieri, Marco Delogu, Pino Musi, Paolo Ventura, as well as Marco Loi, Luca Nostri, Vincenzo Pagliuca, and the students of the most recent The Photo Solstice workshop.
Moving beyond stereotypical imagery of Sardinia — no polished beaches or picturesque shepherds — the project explores the island through forgotten places, weathered landscapes, and shifting presences. Photography becomes a tool to interrogate the territory, capturing its contrasts, traces of the past, and tensions between construction and decay. Each image invites viewers to pause, embrace uncertainty, and immerse themselves in a Sardinia that engages, questions, and reveals a deep and original perspective on the region.
The exhibition will be open until November 26th and is accompanied by a newly published catalog — including both exhibited and previously unseen works — that brings together the results of years of collaboration between Fondazione di Sardegna and Marco Delogu, published by Punctum.
The project, among the winners of the public call for proposals for the promotion of contemporary Italian photography abroad, aimed at the diplomatic-consular network and Italian Cultural Institutes around the world, was made possible thanks to the support of the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
