VIII Italian Research Day in the World. Lecture by Prof. Camillo Ricordi: “The Healthspan Code”

Invito “The Healthspan Code”

Unhealthy longevity has become the worst pandemic of the 21st Century. In the US, 90% of the population over 65 has one or more degenerative diseases, linked to accelerated, unhealthy aging, from diabetes and autoimmune diseases, to renal, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, osteo-articular conditions and cancer.  Besides human suffering, this challenge imposes unsustainable healthcare costs, now already $4.7 Trillion/year in the US alone (20% of the GDP).

What can we do to reverse this trend?

A cross-cutting and inclusive Healthspan Medicine strategy is required to maximize lifespan in physical and mental health, including 4 levels of intervention:

  1. prevent people from becoming patients (predictive diagnostics to identify and neutralize invisible risk factors that precede the progression toward a disease by years);
  2. reverse disease progression at early stages;
  3. treatment of those already affected;
  4. prevent disease recurrence after initial therapeutic success.

Starting with his essays The Healthspan Code and Therapeutic Revolution, in the lecture scheduled at the Italian Cultural Institute in Miami on Wednesday, May 14, Professor Camillo Ricordi will explain how we could change Healthcare as we know it today and improve Healthspan. This event concludes the series of talks dedicated to the celebrations of the Italian Research Day in Miami.
